Green Beret Rides 1,000 Miles For Combat Vets

Bearded Afghanistan War veteran and former Green Beret Ray Knell a horse named Mustang Sally and three mules are planning a 90-day, 1,000-mile solo trip along the Continental Divide, writes Lance Benzel at The Gazzette.

In May, Knell plans to leave on the mission for which they’ve all been training: a 90-day, 1,000-mile solo trip along the Continental Divide from Lake George to Bozeman, Mont. Along the way, the quartet will travel through some of the more rugged terrain in the West, including Rocky Mountain National Park, with Knell hunting his food wherever possible. At the conclusion of the journey, the trail-tested ponies and their saddles and tack will be donated to a nonprofit called Heroes and Horses, which arranges high-mountain pack trips for combat vets struggling to adjust to new lives.

“They take guys out to the mountains that have missing limbs, traumatic brain injury (and) in some cases very extreme PTSD,” Knell said. “The animals have to be well-trained. There can’t be any compromise on that.”
